Sociologist and documentary photographer Lewis Hine was born on September 26, 1874. He went to work for the National Child Labor Commission in 1908 and over the following decade took thousands of pictures of children working in American industries. Hine’s photographs were influential in persuading lawmakers to introduce labor laws to protect children.
