United States Senator Edward William Brooke, III (b. October 26, 1919)
Edward W. Brooke of Massachusetts was elected to the Senate in 1966 and served until 1979. The Washington, D.C. native was the first African American elected to the Senate by popular vote. He remained the only black Senator in the 20th century until Carol Moseley Braun (D-IL) in 1993, and was the last Massachusetts Republican Senator until Scott Brown was elected in 2010.
